Excitingly, restrictions are starting to ease, and summer is rapidly approaching. Like me, you’ll probably have lots of picnics on your agenda. And a picnic offers an excellent day out, where you can dive into a delightful al fresco feast, with your mates. From pristine beaches, to lush grasslands and parks, there are plenty of places for picnics in Christchurch. Here are seven of our favourites, so you won’t have difficulty deciding.
1. Godley Head, Sumner
Hike the coastline track, and reward yourself and your mates after with a D.I.Y picnic. Just 50 minutes drive from the centre, you could begin at Taylor’s Mistake Beach and embark on the trail enriched in history and culture, from its WW2 origins to spotting lots of wildlife. Indeed, a spectacular area for picnics in Christchurch.

2. The Groynes
North of Christchurch, you’ll find this recreational gem. From bush adventures, to boating on the lakes, fishing, and more…you and your gang won’t be short of things to do. After all the adventure, you can pick a spot to perch yourselves in the park, and have a magical picnic. Wonderfully, dogs are allowed, so your furry friends won’t be left behind.

3. Port Hills & Victoria Park
Pop on your active gear, and hike up these picturesque hills to experience unforgettable views, capture dazzling photos, while you dive into a delicious picnic. Certainly, sunsets atop of the hills are spectacular, with a view of the ocean in the background. Port Hills is actually one of the most instagrammable places in Christchurch.

4. New Brighton Beach
Another iconic place for picnics in Christchurch is this beautiful beach. Popular with tourists, mainly because of the longest pier in Australasia, it will well known. Indeed, you’ll catch the most magical sunsets, while watching swimmers brave the waves. A fantastic summer picnic date, or spot to make memories with your friends. Don’t forget your camera for this one.

In lush gardens, surrounded by roses, tress and other plants, unwind while digging into a delightful picnic. The unique area is huge, so there’s plenty of space to social distance, and still have fun. To satisfy your sweet tooth, why not check out the scrumptious Cream Waffle shop in the gardens, where you can make your own OTT waffle.

This private park near Lyttelton boasts precious walks, a famous waterfall, plenty of recreational activities, exotic trees and more. With an array of picnic sites across the giant park, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Equally, for a special occasion, you can reserve a spot for large groups. Sunsets are enchanting here, so be sure to catch one. There is a $5 adult entrance fee, and $1 child entrance fee to the park.

7. Quail Island
If you’re an adventure enthusiast, this place might be on your radar. You can reach Quail Island in just 15 minutes by a ferry down at Lyttleton Harbour. Opt to chillout on the beach, explore the land, or find some grassy area with a view to perch your picnic. Indeed, it’s a tranquil and peaceful place for a picnic.
